DG Then & Now - The Rear Fuselage
Like the other fuselage sections, the rear fuselage section was in very good condition when it arrived at Brooklands. The rear fuselage was joined to the centre fuselage at Brooklands by engineers from Air Salvage International using aluminium doubler plates. Once reattached, volunteers sanded down any surface corrosion and primed and and painted the whole section. The final task was to apply DG's registration and the blue cheatline of the British Airways 'Negus & Negus' livery that she wore throughout her operational life.
Vistors boarding DG today enter the aircraft through what was the rear cargo door in the rear fuselage. Prior to DG moving to Brooklands, this door had actually been missing for a number of years and indeed the rear fuselage section had been at the museum for several months before - and to everyone's huge relief - the door turned up in a dark corner of a hangar at Heathrow!
