DG Then & Now - The Right Wing
For the move by road to Brooklands, Delta Golf's wings had to be cut off (by design they do not unbolt). During the reassembly process they were reattached to the centre fuselage using several hundred aluminium channel sections. This repair method was designed to not only support the weight of the wings themselves but also the weight of the engines intakes, engine bay doors and centre walls, the twin secondary nozzles, the elevons and the outer wing sections (which do unbolt). The repair was not, however, designed to support the considerable weight of 4 Olympus engines (which weigh 3 tons each!). This is why Delta Golf does not have engines fitted today. Once reattached, the wings were sanded down and had two coats of primer and two coats of 'Concorde White' paint applied.
